Aiken's History

Aiken has a very rich and unique history. It was founded in 1835, and named after the president of the South Carolina Railroad, William Aiken. In the late 19th century aiken gained fame as a wintering spot for the wealthy Northeast. Many of these Winter Colony homes remain in the Historic Distoric. Downtown is much like it was in the 50’s, with every major street a beautiful parkway with wonderful shopping.

Aiken has an extremely active equestrian community with over 50 polo fields, a spring and fall steeplechase, trailriding in the Hitchcock Woods, Thoroughbred racing, foxhunting and more.

Hitchcock Woods  
The Hitchcock Woods

Donated to the city of Aiken by the Hitchcok family in 1939, the Hitchcock Woods, 2100 acres of hiking and riding trails, is one of the largest urban forests in the nation. Thanks to the thoughtful management and expertise of the Hitchcock Woods Foundation over the years, the woods are now an established part of the historic, cultural, and scientific heritage of the State of the South Carolina and the nation. It continues to be a haven for hikers, equestrians, dog walkers, runners, bird watchers, nature lovers and history buffs today.

Palmetto Golf Club  
Golf

Home to the Historic Palmeeto Golf Club, Aiken has many opportunities for the avid golfer. Overnight guests of the Green Boundary are allowed a round of golf during their stay provided the course is open and times are available. Green Boundary members are afforded a round of golf once monthly. The Augusta National, home of the Master’s Tournament, is only a short thirty minute drive.
